While most people (especially my boys) are counting down the days till Christmas, I am counting the days till Jan 1. There is something refreshing about Day #1. It’s a fresh start. A clean slate. A chance to start something new. I can’t wait to get my new calendar and start transferring notes and plans from my head to paper. Once I write them they become real. They are no longer just floating out there. They become something I am doing.

For two yrs I have talked about training and entering a 100 mile timed race. I have a pretty busy sched and lots of commitments and I have used those as a reason to shelf that pursuit till life settled down. Well the fact is that I don’t want life to slow down. I feel most alive when I run from one obligation to another. A typical day starts at 3:30AM and if I’m lucky I can turn my mind off around 11. It’s not ideal, but it is what drives me.

So, 2014 I will enter a race that far exceeds my talent level. Will require way more training than I have time for. And I will look at it like I can’t fail. Like that is not even an option.

Get outside your comfort zone. Make plans to do something scary. What would be on your list of things to do if you knew that you could not fail?

As a trainer I am asked quite often the generic question of “how do I lose this stomach?” Or “what’s the best way to lose weight?” I am happy to give a couple pointers, but really the answers are all around. The best way to figure out what is gonna work for you is to watch someone that you want to be like and do what they do. Simple. Right?

I did not grow up with a business background and I did not study business in college. So I do the next best thing. I watch and take notes of smart business people. I observe how they use their best skills (personality, IQ, emotional intelligence) and how they pair that with great business ideas. Then I copy them. I could be wrong, but I will bet many of them did the same thing when they were just starting their business.

This same way of thinking can be applied to most areas of our lives. You want to be a great parent then watch someone you respect and how they raise their kids. If you want to be in great shape then look around at someone that is in great shape and shadow them. Watch what they eat. Pay attention to how they focus on taking care of themselves when its not convenient.

I have a couple clients that are in really great shape. It’s a great advantage in this business to have walking billboards! The truth is that they all follow the same formula. 1) They workout 2 hours plus each week. 2) They drink lots of water. 3) They decided to stop making excuses.

Simple. Pay attention.

I have spent a lot of time lately reflecting on this past year. Lots of personal and business victories and maybe a few losses. One thing I need to do better on is defining clear goals. At some point just saying that I want to increase business is not enough. Saying I want to get in better shape is not enough. How will I truly know if I accomplished much if I don’t have a way to grade myself?

Often I hear clients say that they want to get in better shape. Its #1 on the things they want to accomplish. The issue with this is that “getting in shape” is so hard to define. It has no end and its hard to stay motivated without an end in sight. We should all create a goal that has the ability to be accomplished and rewarded.

Feeling like 2013 was just not your year? Thats ok! Use the next couple of weeks to think about what you would want to do if you were not afraid to fail. Write it down. Pray about it. But don’t try and let it pass you by because you are not sure how you will accomplish it.
